Self-care looks like….You going to the nail salon thinking, “Finally, I am going to get a little bit of self-care!”
You finally get a moment to get away and do something for yourself.
You start thinking of everything on your to-do list and immediately become stressed and overwhelmed.
You leave the salon feeling mentally and emotionally the same, but with nicer looking nails!
Was this truly a self-care experience for you?
You wonder if this is truly it. If this is actually self-care.
You are not alone in thinking this way.
Many of us are not taught to practice self-care on a day-to-day basis and to know what self-care looks like. Do not worry, I will walk you through some of the things you can implement today to begin understanding what self-care truly looks like.
1. Self-Care Is Taking Care of Your Emotional Health
Oftentimes, we think that a manicure will help us feel happy. You are correct that in the moment, getting pampered feels good, but that feeling doesn’t last. Self-care means that you do what you can to feel emotionally healthy. It means that you have to reach out for help when it is needed. This may look like reaching out to talk to friends, family and maybe a licensed professional.
2. Self-Care Is Taking Care of Your Physical Health
This can prove challenging at times, because we often confuse physical health with an image of what it is that we should look like. However, doing simple things that contribute to our physical health is all we need to practice self-care. This may look like making sure we drink plenty of water and get the recommended walking time that we need to keep active.
3. Self-Care is Knowing What To Do To Prevent Burnout
Burnout is something many of us struggle with at one point or another. Some women struggle with it daily and have been struggling with it for months to years. Self-care means that we can identify our triggers and warnings ahead of time to know when we need to take a break to recharge before our batteries wear out.
4. Self-Care is Taking The Time You Need To Recharge
Do you know what it looks like to recharge? This can look different for many people. For some it may mean needing half an hour a day to do something that feels good while for others it may mean taking a day off from work every month. Some people recharge by going for a walk outdoors while others need alone time to meditate.
5. Self-Care is Loving Yourself
Finally, self-care is loving yourself. To practice self-love is the ultimate goal in self-care. Do you love yourself? I urge you to think about this question and examine what you can do today to begin or make the process of self-love stronger for yourself.
Explore the categories of self-care I’ve outlined on this blog post. Maybe you already do all of the self-care things I’ve listed or maybe you practice none. Where ever you are in your self-care journey, take time to identify what you can begin to work on today.
Be Your Most Beautiful Self.
